Fun with hats

I can't see how funny this is, but I know it's hilarious.

Conquering the warped wall

Ollie had his birthday at SkyZone this year and I found out I have a future in reality TV show competitions.

Quiet time

You might need to turn up the volume for this one.

Harsh realities

Guess what, kids? Only seven more months until summer vacation! Now let's get to school.

Halloween 2017

Everybody else is trick or treating today, but Emma and I already had Trunk or Treat at our schools to practice our candy grabbing skills. Here I am at Emma's school, getting ready to hand out candy to her class in the back of our decorated car.

And here's Princess Belle! Aunt Beth said Emma couldn't pull off black shoes with the dress, but I think she managed.

I've never seen Belle hanging out with Batman and Spiderman before. I don't know why not. They all probably have great stories to share.

Next up was my school, and my costume. I tried leaping tall buildings in a single bound, but I could only make it over short ones.

Let's be honest: You can't handle the good looks we're giving here. We cleaned the place out of candy. And we'll do it again tonight.

Princess time

Just a girl playing dress up on a relaxing weekend morning. What more could you ask for?

Oh also I have magic powers and we're battling an evil witch. No biggie.

Testing out potential costumes

Um, no.

Um, no.

You know what? We'll think of something later.

Pumpkin picking

Sunday was our annual pilgrimage to the pumpkin patch for Halloween decorations, and as always, Dad made jokes about our heads being pumpkins and trying to pick them. Very funny.

Emma wanted to pick this pumpkin, but Mom said it wouldn't fit in the house.

We almost got lost in the corn maze, but luckily Jonathan used his Cub Scout skills to navigate a way out.

Finally, the perfect one. Now somebody come carry it for me.

This was a pretty bumpy ride, but it got the job done.

(Yeah, he really did carry that one back to the wagon.)

Can you imagine the size of the pumpkin they're picking if they have a wagon that big?

First Cub Scout campout

Dad and I hung out with the local Cub Scout troop this weekend and had a great time with some of the outdoor activities. Here I am talking with the Den leader about some of the local leaves we found.

And, after a solid hike, we had hot dogs and smores cooked on the campfire.

We didn't get to sleep out in a tent this time, but I can't wait until we get that chance soon. Dad said I could sleep on the back porch if I really wanted to try it sooner, but I feel like he's missing the point.

One last taste of summer

This is probably the last time I'll be allowed outside barefoot for a while, isn't it?

Soccer practice with Dad

Coach wanted us to try a new challenge at soccer practice this week, so he drafted some of the parents to help. That meant I had to cover Dad.

He had some OK moves, but he really needs to attack the net more. That's OK, we'll get him there soon enough.

Emma school picture, 2017

We're a little behind posting this -- it was taken over the summer, and we just got prints now -- but I think I'm cute enough to get away with the tardiness.

Movie story time

What's better than watching a movie? Retelling the movie.

Afternoon fishing

I dunno, Jonathan. This seems a lot messier and wetter when Pop takes us fishing.

Fidget skillz

I mean, I don't know either.

No idea

Of course we need the books and the pillows and the balloon and the cars for this game, Dad. How else would we play it?

Excited about penmanship

Who doesn't love a good letter E?

Household chores

OK, but can I have some fruit snacks after I power wash the front walk?

Soccer with Dad

Coach wanted us to scrimmage against new players this week to get some extra practice, so ...

Yep, that's Dad playing forward. He did OK. I think he needs more time working on his passing, though.

Doing homework

It's a good thing Jonathan was here or I wouldn't have any idea how to get these worksheets done.

One more party

Hey! Mom and Dad said I'd get one more party before birthday week was over, but where is everybody?

Ah, that's better. But you all know most of the cake is mine, right?

BIRTHDAY CAKE!!!

Dad said it's not just for me, but Mom and Jonathan don't like this kind of icing, so you do the math.

Happy birthday to me (version 2, part 3)

Another year, another chance to worry about how small that big bear is getting because Mom and Dad never feed it any dessert or make sure it gets enough exercise.

Here I am with the fuzzy guy three years ago this week:

And here I am two years ago:

Last year:

And this year? The bear and I look exactly the same as 12 months ago:

I do think we should get some better sneakers for him, though. I'm worried about how small he may look next year.

Making friends

They're both thinking "that one is soft and cuddly."

More and more and more swings

Seriously, this child would sleep in the swings if we let her.

Nature walk

We took a family stroll by the lake around the corner to explore. While Mom and Dad were looking for frogs, I found a four-foot tall heron relaxing on the lillypads.

We also found a whole mess of small turtles, and then this one that was the size of Emma.

And Dad found a really tame butterfly on the back porch, which was awfully cool too.

Reading together

Three's a difference between "reading together" and "reading, together."

Swinging takes no breaks

Seriously, Dad? We can rest when we're asleep. Not now.

First day of second grade

Yep, that's what a second grader looks like.

Well, OK, this is usually what he looks like. But still.

Face pizzas

They sound weird, but they taste delicious.

Oh, yeah, and that's my tooth. It's really, really, really, really loose.

Taking Aunt Kate to the Capitol

Since we had a few days of summer vacation left, Emma and I decided to take Kate (and Grandmom and Pop) for a mini tour of DC. Luckily, Dad knew a guy who could get us inside the cool parts of the Capitol. (It was Dad.)

Here we are looking at the Capitol dome. The paintings there are ridiculously huge.

Here's what that dome looks like.

Not many people know it, but there's a secret train underneath the Capitol building. Pop was a little scared, but we calmed him down.

And here's what it would look like if Aunt Kate was elected Speaker of the House. Emma is concerned about her tax policies. I'm unimpressed with her speechwriter.
